Davy Goes To Wexford
I don’t think that this poem needs any introduction or explanation as everyone knows that since the Banner man arrived to take charge of the Wexford hurlers they are competing with the best in the country.
Wexford hurling was in the doldrums it was going nowhere fast
The last time we had silverware was in the distant past
Then came the man from county Clare and Davy was his name
And since he’s been our manager we’re playing a different game.
We’re playing the sweeper system, an extra man at the back
The forwards are playing at mid field and starting the attack
The wing backs are running up the line to catch the diagonal pass
And shoot the shlitor to the net, putting the goalie one his ass.
So now were winning matches that we couldn’t win before.
The Dublin and the Galways we leave them on the floor
It was in the Leinster final that we laid it on the mat
We did what we couldn’t do for years we skinned the Kilkenny cat
Then Davy got uneasy, he was calling it a day,
The boys of Wexford had a job to convince the man to stay
The travelling it was killing him for that they would pay dear
But everybody knows it’s a long long way from Clare to here
Now Davy is back in Wexford to finish off the job
I wouldn’t like to hazard a guess, it cost a fair few bob
For the County chairman he has a two year plan
Davy is after McCarthy and Paul is after Sam
Oh we’ll be dancing at the cross roads like we did in ninety six
We’ll be jumping ore the bonfire waving hurley sticks
We’ll be hanging from the rafters in every pub in Wexford town
To welcome home the boys of Wexford our heroes of renown
