The Duffry Rover
I wrote the Duffry Rover so it could be sung to the tune of the Wild Rover.
I gave it to a prominent member of the club who said they would sing it some night in the thatch in Kiltealy when they were drunk. I don’t think they ever sang it and I don’t believe that they gave up the drink either.
I’ve been a Duffry Rover for many a year
I’ve played hurling and football without any fear
But lately when I wake up I don’t feel the best
I’ve pains in me arms, me legs and me chest
I went to the Doctor; He said your playing days are ore
Now I never will play with the duffry Rovers no more
chorus

And it’s no nay never
No nay never no more
Will I play with Duffry Rovers
No never no more
I started playing hurling when I was nineteen
playing in the mid field for the junior B team
I was moved to the forwards because I was tall
but every ball that I jumped for, on me arse I did fall
And as hard as I tried ah sure I couldn’t score
now I never will play with the Duffry Rovers no more
chorus
I got in for a throw-in above in Coolree
me marker hurled me on the left knee
I fell to the ground oh what happened at all ?
the Ref hadn’t even thrown in the ball
But to get my revenge I waited me chance
and me marker left Coolree in an ambulance
chorus
I’ve been spat on and sat on and pulled on and rolled
and a couple of times I’ve been knocked out stone cold
I got boxed in the jaw and I lost a few teeth
I’ve had some broken ribs and some bones in me feet
I went into a tackle and the Ref said that was hard
and he reached in his pocket and gave me a red card!
chorus
I’ve been played in positions all over the field
but to play in the goal was where I did yield
I’ve been the lines man, the umpire, the water boy and more
I’ve rubbed arms and legs when mate’s muscles were sore
But when the manager asked me would I play in the goal
I gave him me answer, I will in me hole!
Chorus
I’ve had six broken fingers and seven broken toes
two broken shoulders and one broken nose
I’ve had three broken ankles, hamstrings ligaments and stitches galore,
That’s why I never will play with the Duffry rovers NO MORE!
