Together To The Top

Following on from 2013 the Duffry Rovers coiste na nÓg had another successful year. With another medal presentation night looming the chairman asked me to write another poem for the occasion. I had a bit of a battle to come up with words and phrases that weren’t used in the previous poem. However, I overcame the problem and the finished product was well received on the night. Again delivered from the stage by myself.

So here we are we’re back again to celebrate our year

for the’re teams around the country and of Duffry teams they fear

Blackwater were the first to fall to our minor football men

who brought back the silverware to the Duffry once again

The game was played in Patrick’s Park, into the town goal we did face

Duffry got the first few points and from there they set the pace

The Blackwater lads they battled hard to try and turn the tide

but they were cursed and we were blessed with balls that they sent wide

The captain Conor Nolan from the mid field he did command

and from his team of players one hundred percent he did demand

He led them by example as he soloed towards the goal

and with a rocket of a shot to the net the ball did roll

The lively Gavin Rafter on that day did play his part

as he kicked over points he broke Blackwaters heart

And as the time went on, the margin became more

when the final whistle blew Duffry won by double score

Then we had the juvenile hurlers against the Geraldines from New Ross

and after sixty minutes hurling we showed then who was boss

The first half it was Geraldines as their scores came hard and fast

and the ghosts of finals lost came back to haunt us from the past

But the second half was Duffrys, right from the very start

as the slitor was hit high and low and the goal posts it did part

The full back Mike O Leary, he could catch a falling star

and he cleared the slitor up the field for the lads to put ore the bar

The captain Liam Pender through the mid field bursting forth

as he showed us all how to play the riverdance of sport

And yet the Geraldines kept attacking and put us to the test

but the ghosts of finals lost were finally laid to rest.

Next it was our minor hurlers turn to take to the field

they were unlucky in the Championship but won the County Shield

At half time the Duffry Rovers trailed by eight

and you couldn’t help but wonder had they left it all too late

But in the second half Duffry Rovers had the breeze

and it helped as they picked off some fine points with ease

The captain Ciaran Pender was an inspiration at centre back

as he broke down every form of Liam Mellows attack

Sean Brooks the centre forward showed us that he could hurl

as the green flag and the white, both he did unfurl

I’m glad I was there for this comeback to see

for when the final whistle blew Duffy won by three

The under 14 footballers are back again this year

They accounted for Adamstown in the final without any fear

Adamstown battled hard but the attacks they couldn’t foil

as running through the middle were Stephen Kearns and Seamus Doyle

The captain Jamie Tyrrell, the silver cup he lifted

surrounded by his team mates both talented and gifted

They had won the County final by a large margin

and made some nice headlines in the Echo and the Guardian

There’s another team here tonight that’s worthy of a mention

It’s not fair that the boys should have all the attention

It’s our under 14 football ladies, and it’s well they can smile

for they won the Championship and they did it with style

This is the very first year of their existence

and we never doubted that they could go the distance

We wish them the best of continued success

and I hope next year they won’t have to settle for less

To all those I didn’t mention, it’s not that I forgot

for I saw you on the field of play and you giving it all you got

From the backs up to the forwards, from number one to fifteen

for it takes more than a few lads to make a winning team

I saw you at your training, on winter nights up in the shed

when you could have been contented lying on your bed

But you did it for the Duffy, true Duffy lads you are

and each and every one of you is a sporting star

Good luck young Duffry Rovers, whichever game you play

We’ll be there beside you and support you all the way

And when the going gets tough, whatever you do don’t stop,

Remember Duffy Rovers, together to the top!
